This week all of the onions have been harvested and CSA
members Gabriella and Manuel were at the farm this week to lend a hand with the
first half of the garlic harvest. The garlic
and onions are in the solar sunroom where they will air dry and increase in flavor
and nutrition over the next couple of weeks.
This week we’ve done a lot of hand weeding and mulching of the sweet
potatoes, tomatoes, winter squash and more.
I’m super happy to report the bees have found the squash and zucchini
and the row is again buzzing with activity.
Picture of me in the 80 foot squash and zucchini row with the
nasturtiums planted to deter the squash bugs.
I have to say this is the most beautiful plants I have ever grown J
We also harvested the first pole beans
today and they will be in tomorrow’s share.
It was beetle juice cocktail that saved the day. The bean beetles were horrendous with all the
rain this spring so I blended up the beetles with Dr. Bronners soap and a hot pepper
from last years crop. It worked to keep
the bean beetles from destroying the crop!
Farm Food Favorite: Squash
and Zuc Canoes
Cut your zucchini in
half and scrape out the center and with the pattypan cut out the center. Cut both into small pieces and set to side. Roast zucchini and squash in a small amount
of water until tender. In a skillet sauté
the cut up squash and zucchini with onion, fresh herbs, bread crumbs and ground
beef. Add to roasted zucchini and squash
to make your Canoes. Enjoy!
I will see you all tomorrow at the CSA pickup from 10-12 at Fromage. Please bring a bag for your goodies.
